Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR)

Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) is the largest urban poverty reduction initiative in Bangladesh, and one of the largest in the world.  Its goal is “To reduce urban poverty in Bangladesh” and its purpose is “To improve the livelihoods and living conditions of three million urban poor and extremely poor people, especially women and girls”. US$120 million are being provided for this purpose, on a cost sharing basis, by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and UNDP. The implementing partners are the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) under the Local Government Division, Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, UNDP, UN-Habitat and respective Municipalities and City Corporations. UPPR project and mPower Social jointly introduced a pilot project to test the feasibility of collecting data through mobile phones by program beneficiaries in selected project sites.
